Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Gumiel de Izán (Burgos)

Uno de los fines de patrimonio para jóvenes es llegar a pueblos preciosos pero escondidos. Gumiel de Izán es uno de ellos y además nos esperaron con las puertas abiertas, nunca mejor dicho,porque abrieron la iglesia para nosotras. Eso sí, llamamos dos días antes de ir. Las norteamericanas no daban crédito de lo que veían en plena meseta. ¿Pero toda España es así?, nos preguntaban.

Este pueblo esta muy cerquita de Lerma así que os recomiendo a todos que tanto si vais hacia el norte como si viajáis hacia Madrid y el sur, hagaáis una parada en este sitio tan increíble. Between Madrid the capital of Spain and the city of Burgos, there is an area called “Ribera del Duero”, belonging to the province of Burgos. The river Duero gives name and geographically is the backbone of this region that occupies the southern extreme and the province of Burgos.  

By way of the region’s highway; Peñarada de Duero, Caleruega and Clunia as well as Monasterio de la Vid (Monastery of the grapevine), can be visited and are of great interest, Monasterio de la Vid and Gumiel de Izán with its impressive church. In Gumiel  de Izán we were with the Heritage for the Youth the same day that we visited Lerma and the convent of La Aguilera.

Gumile de Izán had in its land people of great social and aristocratic importance.  Its parish church, dedicated to Holy Mary, was constructed en the 15^th and 16^th centuries, although its façade is from the 17^th century.

In its interior, the main altarpiece stands out by an anonymous artist.
